I'm always very perplexed when employes feel the need to ask for a raise due to financial circumstances. Raises aren't given because an employee isn't living comfortably with their current salary. They're given based on merit. You'll have much better chances of getting a raise by taking on new responsibility, having good work ethic, working hard, taking initiative, etc. Then you can present your case to your boss for why you deserve a raise. I always try to put myself in the position of my boss and ask, "Would I give this employe a raise???"
